The Language of Number : Golfers in Egypt

According to official statistics :

  • There are 700 golfers in Egypt.
  • Only 7 from them are Egyptians and the rest are foreigners !!
  • The golf court with 18 holes consumes annually 3/4 million bcm of water !!

I wish that there are numbers for the golf clubs and courts in Egypt , seriously because then we will know how much water we are wasting in a country whose people can’t find clean water whether to drink or irrigate their crops with ; in a country that is fighting a fight of a life time to keep its share from the Nile and knows in the same time that this share won’t be enough for her in 2017 !!!!??

  2. I think that the Egyptian golf federation and the clubs may have something to say about the stats; go out to the clubs and you'll see that there are many Egyptians playing the sport.
Whilst golf courses do drink much water, it's also important to know that courses are built near to hotels and housing projects for the purpose that waste water that would otherwise go down the drain is being used for watering the courses. There are now also courses with grass that are able to be watered with saline sea water instead of fresh water.
The article should not be attacking courses for the consumption of water, but question why - if Egypt has championship courses - is the country not able to attract big tournaments as they have in Dubai and Doha. Prize money is the main reason, but if the Egyptian media would support sports(rather than attacking them) with coverage other than just football (such as a major global sporting event as the Pharoahs Rally) then private sector companies would come in with their sponsorship and prize money. Not only would this help build Egypt's economy with increased tourism through international TV coverage of large sporting events, but this would also attract more Egyptians to participate in sports rather than just using sports clubs as social clubs where they sit digesting the junk fast-food that they have consumed. Egypt has an over-weight problem, with around 10% of the population suffering with diabetes (higher than the US). They need to eat less sugar and salt based diets and exercise more. Golf is a great exrcise, where the player can walk up to 7km in one game!
From an environmental view, look at Dubai and you'll see that their rain-fall has increased over the last decade due to the increase in green areas.
I'll also not start about the amount of taps I see left turned on, broken water pipes in the streets and the general disregard for the use of water, as well as the disregard for treeas that are being pulled down for development.
So I would say leave the golfers alone for now and look at the bigger picture of what is going wrong with sports in Egypt.

  3. @lotusmassages , thank you dear :)

@anonymous , I look the bigger picture of what is going wrong with our water national security and economy in Egypt, with my all respect to your favorite sport , I think it is wasting huge amount of water and land which the majority of the Egyptians including your children and grandchildren will need more than a golf trophy on your shelf
